Today, after extensive experimentation, Orfila Vineyards features 40 acres of Syrah, Sangiovese, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussane and Merlot. The winery also contracts for ultra premium Johannisberg Riesling and Gewuerztraminer grapes from Ventana Vineyards in Monterey County; Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown in Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo County; and Chardonnay grapes grown at Bien Nacido Vineyards in Santa Barbara County.
Fortunately, the experimentation paid off and Orfila Vineyards has astounded the wine industry with the quality of wines produced with San Diego County grapes. With more than 1,000 medals in prestigious wine competitions, Orfila's reputation is expanding overseas.
In 2005, the winery sold 1,667 cases - more than 20,000 bottles -- to an exclusive wine distributor in Tokyo. The wines can now be found in some of Tokyo's finest restaurants, alongside the best vintages from around the world.
