Orfila Vineyards and Winery is a small winery nestled in the picturesque San Pasqual Valley of Escondido, California. Founded in 1994 by Alejandro Orfila, a former Argentine ambassador, the winery has become a prominent figure in Southern California’s wine scene, celebrated for its artisanal, small-batch handcrafted wines. Orfila is particularly renowned for having both Italian and Rhône-style varietals, which beautifully reflect the character of the land.
Spanning 70 acres, with 40 acres planted in premium grape varietals, Orfila benefits from a Mediterranean-like microclimate—warm days balanced by cool coastal breezes—perfect for producing high-quality grapes. The estate vineyards are home to varietals such as Syrah, Sangiovese, Merlot, Viognier, and Montepulciano. Additionally, Orfila sources grapes from esteemed regions like Happy Canyon in Santa Barbara (Sauvignon Blanc), French Camp (Lagrein, Malbec), Santa Rita Hills (Chardonnay), Santa Maria Valley (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay), and Temecula Valley (Pinot Gris, Vermentino), which contribute to the complexity and depth of Orfila’s wines.
Under the leadership of winemaker Andrew Wisniewski, Orfila’s wines have reached new heights. Wisniewski’s dedication to sustainability and respect for the natural environment are central to his winemaking approach, allowing him to craft wines that authentically represent the San Pasqual Valley. The winery’s Rhône-style Syrah is especially lauded for its balance, elegance, and rich flavors.
Visitors to Orfila are greeted with breathtaking views of the San Pasqual Valley from the winery’s stunning tasting room, providing the perfect backdrop for exploring its wines. The knowledgeable staff enrich the tasting experience with insights into the winemaking process and the unique characteristics of each wine.
Orfila Vineyards and Winery continues to be a beacon of quality and hospitality in Southern California, inviting guests to savor world-class wines in a truly remarkable setting.
